  • MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA smells like memories exhibition
2014Silly Thing

The "Smells Like Memories" exhibition was opened at Amelia Johnson Contemporary on 5th April 2014. Using the Replica collection of Maison Martin Margiela as a launch pad for creativity, we were one of the five selected photographers from Hong Kong and Japan to create visual imagery with the six fragrance themes (which was Beach Walk, Flower Market, Funfair Evening, Jazz Club, Lazy Sunday Morning and Promenade in the Gardens accordingly).

In our set of photographs, six ambiance shots were taken at very local locations, such as currency exchange shops, jewelry stores and the bright neon signs of Sichuan noodles shops. They was kept out of focus and it acted as a contrast towards the cliched romantic themes with the most unromantic local sceneries.

On the right hand side, six female models with similar features were chosen in order to confuse audiences as to whether they were the same person. The 45 degrees viewpoint of models acted as an observer, and looked at the scenery as an outsider, representing an indifferent atmosphere.
